Abstract

The thermal management of Lithium-ion batteries is essential to keep them within the permissible temperature range and to promise the performance, life, and safety of electric vehicle batteries. Phase Change Materials (PCM) based passive battery thermal management is a promising method for cooling Li-ion batteries. This study investigates the cooling characteristics of a pouch cell with two PCMs of different melting temperature ranges. Energy generation in the cell at different discharge rates is estimated numerically using the NTGK electrochemical model. The numerical model is validated with experiments from the same pouch cell. The cell's surface temperature estimation and hotspots are investigated using an infrared camera. The hotspots are located near the terminals of the cell. PCM35 and PCM28, with melting temperatures of 35°C and 28°C, respectively, are used to cool the pouch cell passively. PCM35 and PCM28 reduced the average temperature by 6°C and 10°C, respectively, for the discharge rate of 5C compared to no cooling. PCM28 outperforms with better temperature uniformity also. PCM is very effective as a cooling system as the effectiveness parameter is always greater than one for both PCMs.
