Abstract

A numerical simulation model was developed using Ansys Icepak (V. 2021 R2) CFD software to analyze the conjugate heat transfer of a 1U HPC server configuration having two CPUs. Experiments were carried out to validate the CFD model. The experimental setup was made up of a plexiglass configuration similar to a 1U HPC server with provision of heat generation and air flow for cooling. The simulation result of CPU temperature obtained from CFD model was compared with experimental results. The steady state conjugate forced convective heat transfer study was carried out at different heat loads assigned to each CPU (25.8 W to 45.3 W). The variation of the temperature of CPUs at different heat dissipation rates was studied numerically and experimentally. The results obtained from CFD model were found to be in good agreement with experimental results. The CFD simulation model was able to compute temperature of CPUs with errors ranging from 0.2 to 6.4 %. The methodology developed in the study can be used for thermal analysis of any HPC server or workstation.
