Abstract

Results for heat transfer coefficient measurements in rectangular channels with pin fin turbulators into which delta wing vortex generator (VG) elements are inserted are presented here. Four different configurations of VGs are investigated, and spatially resolved local Nusselt number variation with changing Reynolds number is presented for all configurations. Detailed data with several Vortex Generator configurations was acquired and has been presented for the inline case. However, only the best case performing VG case was used for the staggered case and data for this case has also been presented. Pressure drop for the inline and staggered array is nearly same, and the addition of VGs results in a rise in pressure drop. The highest spatially averaged Nusselt number values for the range of experiments conducted were approximately 30% higher than those for the base case in which only fins were present. The thermal performance computed for enhancement of heat transfer at constant pumping power for the best case was computed to be 1.1 for the inline case and 0.95 for the staggered pin case, which makes the present modification with inline pin fins attractive for use in applications.
