Abstract

This paper addresses entropy generation in the human molar tooth. A finite element method-based analysis has been carried out to solve the energy equation in a multilayered domain where energy from metabolism is also considered. A temperature field is imposed on the crown of the tooth. The results show that enamel and dentin are the areas which undergo significant thermal change. While initially, the temperature rise in the dentin is steeper, the pulp temperature eventually rises above the dentin temperature. This is the reason why pulp also exhibits a sharp entropy generation rate over time. The cementum region is not affected at all by the heat input. Enamel, dentin and pulp are the important areas where losses are associated.
