Selection of coal using MCDM techniques on the thermodynamic parameters

Abstract

This paper addresses a selection of alternative fuel for a thermal power plant in West Bengal by comparing different available alternatives. Five MCDM methods (TOPSIS, ARAS, COPRAS, VIKOR, and SAW) are studied to demonstrate their effectiveness in fuel selection. The study involves 32 fuel samples and five thermodynamic criteria. The weight of the analyses has been determined by Shannon's entropy method. Finally, the Spearmans' correlation coefficient showed TOPSIS is the most reliable technique among the 5 methods. The result of the work indicates sample 32 is the best replacement of the presently using coal because of its relative closeness value i.e., 0.97738.
