Abstract

Peristaltic flow has the property of energy storage, and therefore this kind of flow is observed in various biological phenomena. In this article, a modified approach based on flow impedance is introduced for qualitative analysis of peristaltic flow in a cylindrical tube for low Reynolds number. The fluid obeys Newtonian characteristics, and the flow is considered as laminar incompressible. The flow impedance is determined by transforming the governing fluid flow equations using long wave approximation theory. It is shown that despite of the rigid walls, the peristaltic flow stores and releases the energy in the walls during fluid transportation. The store-release mechanism is presented by an imaginary component of the impedance (reactance) against the real component (resistance). It signifies flow stability. The approach can be quite helpful in diagnosing the various diseases associated with obstruction or clotting.
