Abstract

In this study, we highlight the importance of pore compressibility in the modelling of gas hydrate dissociation during depressurization and simultaneous CO2 sequestration and compare it with the case of pure depressurization. A linear pressure dependent relationship for the pore volume change has been considered. An in-house, one dimensional reservoir simulator has been used to simulate the effects of pore compressibility in these scenarios. Results indicate that the pore compressibility plays an important role in the evolution of gas pressure in the domain. The effect is more pronounced during depressurization, while CO2 sequestration is seen to have a counter effect on the excessive build-up of the pore pressures and might ensure better mechanical stability to the reservoirs. The results also show significant dependence of pressure profile in the domain on the initial hydrate saturation and porosity. The reservoirs with higher hydrate saturations are less prone to excess build-up of the pore pressures and hence may indicate better strength of the reservoir.
