Experimental and numerical investigation of the influence of geometrical parameters on the performance of plate heat exchangers
Abstract
The present experimental and numerical investigation is carried out for the effects of geometrical aspects on the friction factor, effectiveness, Nusselt number, mean channel pressure drop and flow maldistribution for symmetrical sets of plates with corrugation angle β=30°/30°, 60°/60°, and unsymmetrical sets of plates with β=30°/60° of a 1-1 pass with Z-type flow arrangement of the PHE using water-water fluids inside the channels for Reynolds number, Re = 967-2700. The geometrical parameters influence the fluid stream inside the plate channels, which significantly impacts the power consumption and thermal performance. The increment in the mean channel pressure drop is found by escalating the corrugation angle. Effectiveness monotonically varies with−mass flow rate for various corrugation patterns. The present study concurs that the intermediate arrangement of chevron angle (30°/60°) gives the best performance among the three corrugation patterns.
