PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF PERSONALIZED RADIANT COOLING SYSTEM INTEGRATED WITH THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE

Abstract

The Radiant cooling systems have proven to be a low energy consuming systems and able to provide better thermal comfort for building cooling applications. Personalized conditioning systems can improve both occupant's thermal comfort and energy performance. Personalized radiant cooling system (PRCS) works on the principle of radiant cooling and creates a microclimate zone around the vicinity of the occupant. Therefore individual thermal comfort can be met and energy can be saved due to higher effectiveness compared to traditional HVAC systems. Thermal energy storage (TES) provides several alternatives for effective energy use and conservation. Among the different types of thermal energy storage, PCM latent thermal energy storage exhibits superior efficiency and dependability due to its high storage capacity and nearly constant thermal energy. The experimental study investigates the use of shell and tube finned heat exchanger as thermal energy storage for the application of personalized radiant cooling system. This study examined the PCM thermal storage charging characteristics, discharging characteristics, performance of PRCS and energy analysis of the complete system. The results indicated that TES supplies constant chilled water (20°C-22°C) at ≥ 90% effectiveness and 73% efficiency, for effective operation of PRCS, which maintained thermally comfortable environment to the occupant between 25°C and 26°C SET. TES shifted the cooling load from peak period to off-peak period, therefore 5.5% power cost saving achieved by using TES.
