ASPEN PLUS simulation of NH3/H2O and NH3/LiNO3 vapour absorption refrigeration systems

Ammonia-water (NH3/H2O) is the commonly employed working fluid in vapour absorption refrigeration system (VARS), with ammonia (NH3) as refrigerant and water (H2O) as absorbent. Because of the volatile characteristics of water as an absorbent in the system and the relatively small difference in the normal boiling points (NBP) between ammonia and water, an additional component: a rectifier, is required to separate water from ammonia vapour effectively. Hence, there is a need for a more effective absorbent for NH3. The present work considers inorganic salt LiNO3 as an absorbent. A steady-state
model of a 3 TR NH3/H2O and NH3/LiNO3 VARS is built using the process simulator ASPEN PLUS. Peng-Robinson-Boston-Mathias (PR-BM) property method is selected for the NH3/H2O and for NH3/LiNO3 Electrolyte-Non-Random-Two-Liquids (ELECNRTL) method is selected to estimate the
thermodynamic properties. The simulation results match well
with the thermodynamic analysis results with a deviation of
4.7% and 3.1% respectively for NH3/H2O and NH3/LiNO3 systems.
