This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation of heat transfer from L-shaped wicked heat pipe for electronic cooling. In this work, the methods employed for cooling of the condenser are (i) Force convection (fan) (ii) Phase change material (PCM). A square copper plate (17 mm × 17 mm) having 1 mm thickness is attached at the evaporator wall to mimic electronic chip heating. The fill ratio considered in the present study is 50%. An elliptical cross section 7 mm × 4 mm (major axis × minor axis) copper tube with a length of 180 mm is used as a heat pipe. The geometry considered for the experiments comprises an evaporator section of length 17 mm, condenser section of length 50 mm, and adiabatic section of length 113 mm. In case of forced convection cooling, at the condenser wall a triangular profile fins with rectangular cross section made of steel are placed for heat transfer enhancement. The velocities are measured with thermal anemometer. Experiments are carried out with different fan heat inputs (0.064 W or 1.3 m/s, 0.5 W or 2.3 m/s, 1 W or 3.3 m/s, 1.5 W or 4.8 m/s) and with different heat pipe orientations (0, 30, 60, 90°). The base and height of the fins are 18 mm and 12 mm respectively. At 0° orientation the heating is at the bottom and at 90° the heating effect is on side wall. The optimum speed of the fan is found to be 0.5 W (2.3 m/s) . The second method employed for cooling of condenser wall is by usage of a phase change material (N-eicosane). The heat pipe is tested between power levels of 5 and 25 W.
