Some Issues in Testing of Biomass Cookstoves

In the field of cookstove testing, there are several questions which are yet to be answered. The present paper attempts to address a few of them through analysis of experimental data obtained in the laboratory. For this purpose, water boiling tests were performed on a commercially available, advanced biomass cookstove to determine its thermal performance using three different protocols viz., Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Water Boiling Test Protocol (WBT 3.0) and Emissions and Performance Test Protocol (EPTP). Each test was conducted three times to check repeatability and analysis of the data was conducted statistically using student's t-test. Besides, the cookstove was tested over a wide range of fire power to obtain the characteristics of efficiency versus fire power. Through these tests, five issues related to cookstove testing, already addressed by several researchers, have been revisited: (i) the issue of single point efficiency value vis-à-vis characteristic curve for the same; (ii) whether to end the test when all the fuel is consumed or when the water reaches a desired temperature or considering fixed time duration;(iii) whether the water should be allowed to vaporize/boil leading to the question of use of pot lid and final temperature of the water;(iv) role of quantity of water and (v) role of fuel feeding rate. The attempt has been made to answer some of the persisting questions.
A simple way to obtain the curve of efficiency/specific fuel consumption versus fire power over a wide power range through simple modification in an existing protocol has been demonstrated. A few suggestions have been made to reduce the uncertainties in the test result, viz., it is better to end the test when the fuel has burnt completely; use of lid and avoiding boiling of water. Also the need for a rigorous statistical analysis of experimental data has been highlighted.
