Resumo

Energy consumption is strongly linked with the technological advancement of a nation, so developing a sustainable energy economy is essential for future growth. Heat exchangers lie at the heart of every industry, therefore even slight performance gains can enable massive savings in overall energy use. The use of internal fins in these devices can help achieve this goal. Not all shapes of fins perform the same, so it is necessary to have results that allow definitive selection of the most effective geometry. This work compares the thermohydraulic performance of 3 different fin shapes, deployed in annular flows, under turbulent flow regimes. Geometrical parameters of each shape are varied for better understanding of the governing physics, and selection of optimal parameters. For this purpose, numerical solutions are used, and for each case, the thermal conductance and corresponding pressure drop incurred are analysed with reference to a plain annulus. Thermal conductance values almost 3 times that of a plain annulus were obtained, under similar operating conditions. Results indicate that the thermal conductance and pressure drop, both increase with the fin height, but decrease with the pitch. A comparison of fin designs is also presented towards the end.
