Experimental Investigation on Heated Pipe under Spray Cooling

Resumo

This paper presents an experimental investigation conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a cooling pipes in an enclosure with a specific arrangement of steel pipes and spray nozzles. The aim of the study is to provide insight into the behavior of the system under different operating conditions and offer valuable information for the optimization of heat transfer processes in practical applications. The experiment is carried out on an electrically heated pipe cooled by means of a spray with different flow rates. The study examines three different cases to analyse the heat transfer characteristics under different conditions. In case 1, the enclosure operates under ambient conditions with a constant flow while keeping the power input constant. Case 2 focuses on the heating of the pipe beyond Leiden frost temperature followed by quenching process with the activation of spray nozzles. Case 3 replicates this procedure at reduced flow rate. Heat transfer coefficients are calculated for steady-state conditions (Case 1) and unsteady-state conditions (Cases 2 and 3). A comparative analysis of heat transfer coefficients obtained from these cases provides insight into system performance in different scenarios. Experimental findings indicate that the spray cooling of heated pipe is effective across the injection flow rates considered. This knowledge can be used to increase efficiency and optimize heat transfer processes in a number of practical applications, including nuclear power plants.
