Resumo

In the present study, shape optimization of a rectangular channel (width of the channel was twice the height, W/ H = 2) with intersecting ribs was performed using Reynolds averaged Navier-stokes (RANS) based analysis for flow and heat transfer, radial basis neural network (RBNN) as surrogate model and Particle swarm optimization (PSO). The shear stress transport turbulence model was used as closure for turbulence modeling. Angle of attack, the ratio of position of the intersecting rib relative to channel center-line to width of channel and ratio of height of rib to channel hydraulic diameter were selected as design variables for optimization. The optimization was carried out at Reynolds number of 10,000 based on hydraulic diameter of the channel. The objective function viz. thermal efficiency was formulated using radial basis neural network as surrogate model and particle swam optimization was used to determine the optimal point. The thermal performance of the channel was found to be sensitive to the chosen design variables. As a result of optimization, the optimal design showed an enhancement of 12.78 % in overall thermal efficiency.
