Resumo

Residence time available for convective mass transfer from a surface to flow field in high Reynolds number applications is less. Special surfaces like vortex generators, turbulence promotors or depressions can generate vortices or secondary flows by fluid friction and separation. It is well known that these secondary flows help in enhancing mass transport from the boundary and also promote intense mixing. Present study comprises of a laterally swept vortex generator coupled with a dimpled surface. Numerical simulation of convective mass transfer from a liquefying boundary to a high speed flow field are conducted for Reynolds number between 160250 to 320500. Reynolds number calculated in the present study are based on the dimple diameter. Three dimensional turbulent compressible flow field involving mass transport simulations has been carried out using AUSM scheme available in a general-purpose Finite Volume Method (FVM) solver. Normalized Helicity has been used for the graphical representation of concentrated vortices generated by the vortex generator and dimpled surface. Effect of vortex boundary layer interaction and flow separation on mass transfer enhancement are investigated in and around the LSVG and dimple area. It is concluded that LSVG coupled with dimples, proven to be an effective passive mass transfer enhancement technique with acceptable pressure loss.
