To retain the shelf life of horticulture products, after the harvesting, the product is stored at low temperatures inside the cold room. Harvested products are kept in the crates and these crates are stacked in the cold room. Crates of the products obstruct the path of cold air inside the room. For uniform cooling inside the cold room, the stacking arrangement of the crates plays a crucial role in the airflow in the room. The present study concerns the stacking arrangements of the crates filled with apples inside the cold room. A 3-D CFD model is developed based on three different stacking arrangements of crates placed in the cold room. Transient numerical simulations were performed to study the airflow and temperature profile. Temperature inhomogeneity inside the cold room for all three stacking arrangements was investigated. It is found that arrangement A2 is an optimized stacking arrangement as it accommodates 11.1% more crates inside the same cold room as compared to arrangement A1. It is also observed that the change in the temperature inhomogeneity among all three stacking arrangements is insignificant compared to the increment in the volume of the product stored.
