摘要

This work reports pressure drop study through open-cell copper foam by a combined framework of experiment and simulation. We present the use of X-ray micro CT along with image processing for the exact geometrical reconstruction of this stochastic foam. Image processing and CFD mesh generation are performed in commercial software, Simpleware, and further imported to ANSYS Fluent for airflow simulation. The pressure drop from the simulation is compared with the experimental measurement conducted in an in-house wind tunnel. Permeability and inertial coefficient are also determined using pressure drop data for both simulation and experiment. We then discuss the variation of average pressure in flow direction and an important impact of foam geometry on flow field in creating high-velocity jets. The length of these jets is randomly distributed for a stochastic foam, which is analysed using flow visualisation by adding different domain lengths beyond the foam exit-plane. The current work outlines the simulation methodology for better representing the experimental measurement, especially for intricate stochastic foam geometries.
