Numerical Analysis of Critical Factors Affecting the Efficacy of MA on Lungs

Minimally invasive thermal therapies, especially Microwave Ablation (MA) have evolved as the most promising substitute to treat the early phase of cancer. It has significant advantages like treating greater than 3 cm dia tumors with less pain and the possibility to treat critical organs where other treatment techniques like Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) and Cryoablation are restricted. In this respect, the current study has been made to investigate the impact of the crucial factors as follows, frequency, electrical conductivity, relative permittivity, blood-Perfusion rate (BPR), thermal conductivity, and the power on the size of the ablation zone achieved during MA on Lungs. The numerical approach with the help of FEM-based analysis and the Taguchi L27 orthogonal array is carried out where the individual effect of critical factors and maximized ablation volume with optimized settings were derived. The results conclude that applied power has the most significant impact on the output parameter. The positive correlation depicts that as the applied power rises the target ablation volume to eradicate tumors from the region becomes more favorable. Alternatively, the relative permittivity and blood perfusion rates have a negative correlation with the ablation volume. The maximized ablation volume was found out to be 14.35 cm3 with the following optimized settings power3, frequency3, blood perfusion rate3, electrical conductivity3, thermal conductivity2, and relative permittivity2. The results obtained from the present study would be significantly valuable for radiologists & medical practitioners during the planning of the treatment process at the pre-treatment stage.
