摘要

Compact Heat Exchangers are the perfect blend of efficiency and space. They occupy considerably less volume and yet operate at their best. For the very same reason, high-performance Compact Heat Exchangers (CHEs) are best suited for aerospace applications, where there is a space constraint and a need for cooling at high temperatures. This paper highlights the heat transfer performance of the offset strip fins (OSFs) focusing on how they're influenced by fin dimensions and the dimensionless Reynolds number, in terms of design data, namely the Fanning Friction factor ƒ, and the Colburn factor j. A computational fluid dynamics approach is considered to generate the aforementioned design data for single-phase flow employing multiple working fluids. Literature providing correlations for 'ƒ' and 'j' factor with air as working fluid was selected and they were validated using simulations to identify the required methodology. The factors obtained through simulations deviated by 10% from the reference, which were decided as acceptable. Subsequently, literature with correlations for R134a obtained through experimental data was selected as a reference and these correlations were validated using simulations on ANSYS FLUENT 2019R. A 15% deviation was observed and proved the possibility of simulations with R134a as the working fluid. The design data was observed to decrease with an increase in Reynolds numbers and the trends were plotted accordingly. An attempt was also made to simulate two-phase R134a flow and the preliminary results are documented.
