Comparison of Atomization Characteristics of Methanol with Diesel fuel Injection in Isothermal Conditions: A Numerical Study

Methanol is considered by many researchers as one of the relatively cleaner alternatives to traditional internal combustion (IC) engine fuel. Methanol and diesel have a substantial difference in their properties. Therefore, modifications in fuel injection systems are required in diesel engines to use methanol fuel. The study investigates and then compares the atomization characteristics of methanol to diesel. The knowledge of atomization is critical to combustion, and this study would aid in understanding how methanol behaves compared to diesel in a simple atomizer. A single fluid-based, two-phase Euler formulation is employed for the modelling of fuel-air system. Coupled Level Set-Volume of Fluid (CLSVOF) method, multiphase flow model, and SST k − ω turbulence models are used. The study presents the detailed development of methanol jet in a quiescent environment and in isothermal conditions. Compared to diesel fuel, the study concluded that methanol has a lower breakup length and shorter wavelengths of surface waves. Further, the mean drop diameter and Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), which characterise the overall atomization characteristics, were found to be lower for methanol. This shows that for a quiescent environment, under similar conditions, methanol would show relatively better atomization characteristics.
