Abstract

A severe postulated accident that proceeds with low-pressure inside coolant channels can lead to continuous boil-off of moderator, due to channel decay-heat. This will lead to exposure of fuel channels to dry out in upper section of the core. The exposure leads to severe heat-up of the channels, and this induces the deformation of channels under its self-weight and fuel bundle weight. Deformation can be seen as first PT sags and contacts with CT, then subsequently both deform as one unit. If this postulated accident continues, then fuel channels will disassemble and collapse at bottom of Calandria vessel as a debris bed. It is essential to establish the nature of sagging under such severe events through experiments. A scaled-down method, 1/3rd on channel geometric parameters, is adopted for such experiments. A novel approach of edge detection technique is used to measure the high temperature sagging event. This study investigates the effect high temperature transient on channel's structural integrity. This paper is focused on the method development for calculation of pixel wise displacement and its conversion to a meaningful world dimension under very high temperature experiment.
