Gas turbine Vane and blades are cooled by various internal and external cooling techniques. Among the various cooling techniques, Ribs are widely used as internal cooling techniques. Recently gas turbine engine manufacturers are using film cooling techniques for cooling vanes externally. Location of internal ribs in the coolant flow path increases the pressure drop and affects film cooling performance. In the present paper, the authors investigated the effect of film cooling performance due to the presence of ribs by considering a flat plate. ANSYS workbench-21 is used to create different flat plate configurations. The conjugate boundary conditions are used to predict the flow and heat transfer behavior on the flat plate. Two different aspect ratio ribs were modeled to know the effect of the shape of ribs on film cooling performance. The presence of rib affected the film cooling effectiveness and there is a superiority of 283% is observed with no rib case for high aspect ratio rib at higher blowing ratios. High aspect ratio rib cooling has also shown an increase of 73% average effectiveness compared to low aspect ribs.
