Prediction of hydrate growth front using electrical resistance in a cylindrical reactor

Abstract

Natural gas hydrate has gained attention because it is considered as a promising energy source. THF (Tetrahydrofuran) can serve as a substitute for natural gas hydrates investigation because of similarities in their structures. This work deals with prediction of THF hydrate front in a cylindrical reactor using electrical resistance. The experiments are conducted in a cylindrical glass reactor with temperature and electric resistance probes. Further, reactor is connected to a recirculating chiller to maintain thermodynamic conditions necessary for hydrate formation. The hydrate growth front is imaged to determine its location. The hydrate growth led to the transient variation of the temperature inside the reactor due to heat generation. Variation of temperature in hydrate and solution revealed distinct behaviour due to their spatial location and different thermo-physical properties. Experimental observations revealed that both ion concentration and temperature variation impacts the electrical resistance of the THF solution. Electrical resistance of THF solution decreases due to hydrate formation but hydrate formation at its probes can led to its dramatic rise. Further, prediction of the hydrate front through electrical resistance is attempted and an expression has been derived.
