Numerical Study On Catalyst Assisted Combustion Of Premixed Oxy-Methane Mixtures in Platinum reactor

Abstract

The objective of this study was to understand the catalyst assisted combustion of premixed methane and oxygen mixtures in narrow Platinum tubes at different inlet temperatures (300-800K), velocities (100-400 cm/s) and equivalence ratios (1-10). Platinum tube was modelled as Plug Flow Reactor. PFR model was used to analyse the process that involved both gas and surface phase reactions. Numerical results were validated with the literature. It was found that surface reactions played a prominent role and flame formation didn't occur for desired cases without involving surface chemistry. Threshold temperature for ignition was found out as 910K for an equivalence ratio of 5, inlet velocity=300 cm/s and 1 atm. Output from PFR differed from equilibrium composition. Equilibrium temperature estimated was lower than the temperature of exhaust from PFR and it was due to difference in the product composition because of the presence catalytic reactions in PFR. Present study concluded that the rich premixed oxy-methane mixture was the best choice as it results in temperature less than melting temperature of Platinum.
