Modelling and control of parabolic trough field system for feed water heating application

Abstract

Power demand is increasing rapidly with the improvement of technology and socio-economic development. Technology development for green energy sector becomes very important as the coal fired power plant has challenges like, fixed fossil fuel and environmental pollution. The solar photo voltaic and solar thermal become point of interest for power generation and various thermal applications respectively. The solar thermal system can be used efficiently for air heating application, water heating application and solar power or solar assisted thermal power plant application. The main challenge with solar thermal system is intermittent characteristic of solar irradiation. To overcome the intermittent issue of the solar thermal system proper storage system along with controller design is very much important. In the present study solar parabolic trough field (PTF) has been considered for feedwater preheating application in boiler. Parametric study of the PTF has been carried out. To maintain the temperature of the water PI controller has been developed. Controller performance has been studied with the external disturbances like variation of the solar irradiation, change of environmental temperature and variation of the wind speed. Steady state performance of the PTF has been carried out and thermal efficiency has been obtained.
