Abstract

The use of secondary channels in microchannel heat sink for flow disruptions employed by earlier researchers improves the thermal performance. However, diverting flow into the secondary channels without increasing the pressure drop is a challenge. In this paper the problem is tackled by employing the converging secondary channels and modified inlet and outlet walls of secondary channels. The new design is an improvement over the leaf venation microchannel heat sink (LV-MCHS1) which used closing of one outlet in a threechannel set for diverting the flow into secondary channels. The new design (LV-MCHS2) is numerically analysed by using three-dimensional model based on finite volume approach and coupled algorithm and its performance is compared with conventional MCHS and LV-MCHS1. LVMCHS2 shows more amount of fluid flow through secondary channels at inlet region and middle region than in outlet region. LV-MCHS2 reports thermal performance similar to LV-MCHS1 but with 50 percent lower pressure drop penalty. Enhancement factor which is a function of Nusselt number ratio and pressure drop ratio is higher in LV-MCHS2 than LVMCHS1.
