Study of a Waste Heat Recovery Cycle Using Super-Critical Carbon Dioxide as Working Fluid

Several split-flow-based novel cycles have been proposed for Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) using super-critical Carbon dioxide (s-CO2) as a working fluid. Of the numerous cycles available in the literature, the pre-heating cycle is seen as a potential candidate for practical implementation in industrial WHR on account of its lesser number of components. The first step in the practical realization of this cycle involves performance studies under varying operating conditions, i.e., waste heat inlet and ambient temperatures. In this study, the optimal values of operating pressures (low and high side), CO2 mass flow rates, and split fraction that maximize the net power produced by the cycle are obtained using Genetic Algorithms for different operating conditions. The values of the optimal low/high side pressures, CO2 mass flow rate, and split fraction for different operating conditions serve as preliminary inputs to detailed turbomachinery and heat exchanger design prior to practical implementation in industrial WHR.
