Numerical investigation of microfluidic droplet transport based on electrowetting on dielectric

Abstract

In the present paper, a numerical investigation has been made to study the EWOD driven droplet transport phenomenon sandwiched between two parallel plate. Finite element based code COMSOL Multiphysics with two-phase flow and phase field module has been used in the simulation. Conservative phase field method has been proved to be effective in conserving droplet mass. With the application of electric field on electrode where droplet is resting, the droplets are made to move over another electrode through surface tension driven force. The change in contact angle has been characterized through Young-Lipmann equation. It has been observed that the transport time of droplet decreases with increase in channel height after a certain value. Reasonably good agreement has been achieved between numerical and experimental results. Furthermore, a parametric investigation has been made to study the effect of several parameters including channel height, static contact angle and physical properties of droplet on the transport process.
