Abstract

In rotary entrainment, the interface of two immiscible fluids is subjected to external flux by means of rotation. Due to this external force, intermixing takes place across the interface and consequently, heat and mass transfer across the interface may occur. Here an attempt is made to study the dynamics of entrainment phenomenon in a stratified liquid-liquid fluid layers using rotary motion through 3D numerical simulation. Stratified liquid-liquid fluid pair in a cubic container is considered where bottom half of the tank is filled by water and the remaining upper half is filled with kerosene or other user defined liquid. The longitudinal axis of the horizontally placed rotor coincides with the horizontal interface of the stratified liquid layers. Multiphase Finite Volume-based Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) Method is employed for the transient numerical simulation. To capture the turbulence effect k–ω turbulence model is employed. The rate of entrainment is determined in terms of time variation of chute height (CH) and volume fraction (VF) entrained. For better understanding, spatial distributions of phase at different instants of time are also extracted. Effort is made to study the rate of entrainment of one liquid into the other liquid by varying different key parameters like rotor diameter, rotor speed, viscosity, density, and number of rotors used.
