Abstract

The numerical analysis of the distribution of Lorentz force and its significance on the liquid metal flow and heat transfer in the confined enclosure is conferred in this study. The numerical equation for incompressible conjugate buoyancy-driven convective flow in the presence of a magnetic field is developed on the open source CFD platform OpenFOAM. The buoyancy force in the flow is maintained constant by keeping the Rayleigh number (Ra) of 105 at the fixed Prandtl number (Pr) of 0.02. The magnetic field intensity is varied by varying the Hartmann number (Ha) of 0-100. The magnetic field is actuated orthogonal (Bx) and parallel (By) to the gravitational force. The imposed magnetic field on the system induces the Lorentz force in the enclosure. The generated Lorentz force has the orientation reverse to the direction of flow of fluid. The fluid flow pattern is suppressed or bifurcated by the dissimilar orientation of Lorentz force. Hence, the presence of the Lorentz force is the sole responsible for the alteration in the heat transfer in the enclosure. The influence of magnetic field on the pertinent parameters such as Nusselt number, the average temperature in the enclosure, streamlines, and isotherms is discussed in this study.
