Abstract

A detailed numerical investigation on a Variable Channel Width Single Layered Minichannel Heat Sink (VWc SL-MCHS) is carried out using 3-D solid-fluid conjugated heat transfer model. The coolant considered for the study is n-octadecane/water NEPCM slurry with 5%, 10% and 20% particle mass concentration (Cm). The temperature dependent fluid properties of NEPCM slurry are modeled to effectively analyze the thermal performance. The influence of the dimensionless stepped fin length (λ) on the thermal performance of a VWc SL-MCHS is investigated by considering various values of λ (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1). The results show that VWc SL-MCHS outperformed the conventional SL-MCHS in terms of temperature non-uniformity and total pressure drop. The VWc SL-MCHS with λ = 0.8 turned out to be efficient geometry among the considered cases. The improvement in thermal performance of a VWc SL-MCHS with λ = 0.8 is 2.38 times for Cm = 5% and 1.84 times for Cm = 10% as compared to NEPCM slurry based conventional SL-MCHS.
