Abstract

The presence of a vortex generator (VG) plays a significant role in cooling heated surfaces submerged in a fluid flow. In this study a system of rectangular VG attached to a heated base plate is modified to intensify the heat transfer rate. The system is studied numerically. Secondary surfaces (SS) which are fixed over the primary surfaces (PS) of the VG have a significant role in transferring the heat. Downstream of the VG, formation of both the horse-shoe vortices, primary vortex and induced vortex are tracked. Therefore, in order to revise the core strength of these produced vortices, (SS) are added to the (PS) of the VG which amplifies the strength of the produced vortices. The comparative study is performed at 45° angle of attack with respect to the incoming laminar flow of water at Re 350. Heat flux of 1000W/m2 is applied to the base plate. It is found numerically that alteration in the strength of both the horse shoe and the primary vortices enhances the transfer of heat to the fluid by 14.7 %. It has also been found that addition of SS degrades the pushing effect of the produced vortex, as a result it dies early when compared to the case without SS.
