Design and Experimental Investigation on Liquid Nitrogen Cryoprobe for Cryosurgery

Abstract

Cryosurgery or cryoablation is a useful surgical technique in which undesirable tissues are removed using extreme freezing. Cryosurgery's main benefit is that it minimizes the invasiveness and cost associated with conventional surgery. However, the use of the cryosurgical method is limited by an absence of a good understanding of the elementary mechanisms of tissue extermination. There is an abrupt increase in skin-related ailments and cancer, and other cancers in general. The current work is associated with developing a novel cryoprobe having an extended round tip that uses liquid nitrogen as a cryogen for cryoablation. The effective treatment of cryoablation in curative practice greatly depends on the technical proficiency of the cryoprobe (cryosurgical device) used to carry out cryo-operations. Here, a novel LN2 cryoprobe is developed, and a performance evaluation of the cryoprobe is carried out. The cryoprobe had a separate connection of vacuum insulation, and it is easily sealed with the help of an O-ring bush to ease in operation. It has advantages like high safety and low cost. At the different locations (surface and tip) along the cryoprobe, the temperature is measured in air, water, and bio-gel medium at atmospheric pressure. It is observed that the liquid nitrogen cryoprobe produced lower probe temperature and larger iceball growth during the experiment. The heat flux transferred from the surrounding air to the cryoprobe is estimated.
