Abstract

The performance of plate heat exchanger (PHE) has been numerically studied using alumina based nanofluid. The thermophysical properties of nanofluids samples at 0.1 - 1 vol% concentration have been measured in the laboratory. The hot side is at fixed mass flow rate (0.033 kg/s) and 353K while cold side at varying mass flow rate (0.0166-0.0833 kg/s) and 303K. A 3D CFD model of 60° chevron angle having same geometry as of the actual plate was modelled to study thermal performance for different operating conditions. The performance parameters like heat transfer rate, exergetic efficiency and pressure drop have been evaluated numerically. The single phase CFD results were validated with experiments and found in excellent compliance. The numerical outcomes show ~10% and ~7% improvement in HTR and exergetic efficiency using alumina nanofluid with slight increase in pressure drop using nanofluids. The temperature and pressure contours distribution have been shown for different operating conditions.
