Abstract

The major obstacles in acceptance of solar cookers are their inability to cook food during off sunshine hours. In the present experimental work the possibility of cooking during offsunshine hours is explored by utilising PCM as latent thermal energy storage material and thermal heating of absorber plate of solar cooker by PV (Photovoltaic) heating system. The performance comparison of solar cooker using different phase change materials during off sunshine hours is prime focus of the present study. Three different phase change materials benzoic acid, paraffin wax, magnesium nitrate hexa hydrates are selected and are incorporated in spacing between concentric cylindrical finned cooking vessels. Benzoic acid shows best thermal performance as energy storage medium during off sunshine hours. The thermal performance of hybrid PV heating system is also evaluated by calculating the instantaneous thermal efficiency of PV heating system. The average thermal efficiency of hybrid PV cooking system with PCM is around 60% which is 7-10 times more in comparison to no PCM used. The hybrid solar cooker can be effectively utilised for cooking during off sunshine hours.
