Abstract

In the present work, an attempt has been made to find the temperature variation inside the ground for various surface conditions by considering the variation of soil thermal properties with depth. Estimating temperature variation within the subsurface depends on two major meteorological parameters, i.e., atmospheric air temperature and solar radiation. Soil temperature shows spatial and temporal variation due to differences in meteorological parameters with time and change of thermal diffusivity rate with depth. The depth of penetration of heat energy and stabilization of temperature depends on soil thermal properties. The factors which affect subsurface temperature variation are subsurface thermal properties, soil type, moisture content, density, etc. The mineralogical constituent of soil also affects heat transfer within the subsurface. A geographical factor is a latitude and meteorological factor such as temperature of air, speed of the wind, precipitation, the intensity of solar radiation, soil temperature, and vegetation responsible for heat transfer. For the present case, two surface conditions are studied, and the depth at which the temperature becomes constant annually is found out. An analytical solution has been obtained for the temperature at various depths, which requires solving the Fourier series.
