Abstract

The Volume of Fluid method (VOF) is a popular method for simulation of two phase flows with interface dynamics and is one of the more accurate methods. The accuracy of VOF method depends intricately on the schemes employed for interface advection. Interface advection needs to capture the kinematics of two phase interface based on prevailing flow and pressure fields. Most accurate advection methods employ geometric methods that involve complex and relatively costly computations. In the present work a fractional time step based framework is proposed that can be applied to a geometric advection scheme. It is demonstrated that there is significant improvement in the accuracy of some of the simpler geometric advection schemes with minimal increase in complexity with respect to implementation and computational effort. The method is implemented on two variants of Eulerian implicit schemes for fluid advection. Performance of the method is discussed with the help standard two phase advection test problems.
