Abstract

Thermal management of electronics equipment using heat sink has been introduced as an important study. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics study along with experimental work were carried out to investigate the convection heat transfer enhancement of a vertically oriented pin fin heat sink, under natural convection. A heat sink with conventional plate fin and drop shape pin fins were used for the analysis. The comparison was made under the same base-plate dimensions (200 mm length and 150 mm width) for various changes in Ld/D ratio (1.2 and 1.4) of the drop shape pin fin and conventional plate fin. The heat sink is made up of aluminium considering its high thermal conductivity. Various heat inputs (Q) viz. 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 W are chosen for the analysis. The numerical model prepared is solved with the help of finite volume method in ANSYS Fluent. The same is validated with an experimental trial performed. A theoretical correlation from the literature also used to validate the experimental findings. From results, the maximum Nu was found to be 101.65 (Ld/D equal to 1.2) which is 45% higher than the conventional plate fin heat sink. A thermal enhancement factor was measured and found to be maximum 1.80 for Ld/D equal to 1.2 and 200 W heat input.
