Study of peak load condition during indoor climate control for Roorkee weather conditions

The diurnal outdoor temperature fluctuations in summer season causes peak load demand during cooling mode operation of the indoor climate system in the daytime. In winter months, the peak heating load occurs before sunrise, and the outdoor condition does not vary significantly throughout the winter season. To keep the indoor temperature at a desired comfort level, the indoor climate control system must be capable of handling the peak load demand. The present work introduces a mathematical model to estimate the peak load demand during space cooling mode operations. Results were obtained for a room of size 6.3 m × 3.5 m × 3 m, which is maintained at comfort level using a Mitsubishi SRK50ZS-S 1.5 TR 5-star inverter split air conditioner. Research has also been focused on estimating the components of solar radiation for Roorkee location by using ASHRAE clear sky model. Comparisons were made between measured and numerical value of solar radiation. Material properties used for the walls of the room were also considered in the modeling. Simulation results were obtained to determine the temperature of the air inside the room during a diurnal cycle. The temperature of air inside the room is measured using a thermocouple. Comparisons were made between the calculated and measured temperatures of air in the room, and the proposed mathematical model could predict the air temperature within 20% error. Cooling load calculations were also performed to estimate the peak load demand during summer and winter periods. For calculations of the cooling loads, the ambient data of Roorkee during summer and winter periods were considered.
