要約

Two-dimensional (2-D) natural convection heat transfer analysis to assess of coolabilty of core debris settled on a thermal shield layer on corium retention device for a Sodium cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) is carried out. A multi-layer and multi collection tray system is studied for its feasibility as an in-vessel corium retention device to accommodate thermal load arising out from core debris after a severe accident. Turbulence is modeled using the k-ε model with physical boundary conditions and PISO algorithm for pressurevelocity coupling. Numerical simulations are carried out to display the sequential evolution of flow and thermal fields and the maximum temperature reached in the source. Investigations are done for three different expected durations of heat source arriving at Core Catcher Plate (CCP) to retain the corium within acceptable thermal design limit safely. A multi-layer cavity consists of a top layer of 50 mm thick magnesium oxide (MgO) layer with a 20 mm thick base layer of austenitic stainless steel (SS316LN). The advantage of a thermal shield layer on base plate retaining the heat source has been quantified.
