要約

The potential of flow blockage accident leading to a whole core severe accident is reduced by removing the molten fuel out of core region. Both experimental and numerical studies have confirmed that the existing fuel subassembly designs are not self-reliant in mitigating the severe accident. An innovative design like Fuel Assembly Inner DUct System (FAIDUS) with large hydraulic diameter and slim wall is introduced at the subassembly level to impart inherent safety to the core in accident conditions by enhancing the molten material relocation. Design of FAIDUS is a trade-off between reactor size affecting the economics and safety. Hence, an optimised design of FAIDUS is indispensable. Towards this, a robust multi-phase, 1-D, transient enthalpy based mathematical model has been developed to assess the relocation capacity of the FAIDUS and to determine the optimum diameter of the inner duct that facilitates maximum dispersal of molten material out of the core. It is confirmed that FAIDUS design concept delivers the best alternative way for complete relocation of molten material out of core, thus limiting the accident progression further.
