Experimental Study on a Novel Cylindrical Air Gap Membrane Distillation System

Membrane distillation (MD) has emerged as a popular technique for fresh water recovery from brackish or saline water. A great feature of MD is that it is based on utilization of low temperature and low-pressure for flux production. This study presents statistical analysis for a new design of cylindrical air gap membrane distillation system. The module is designed and fabricated in the form of shell and tube heat exchanger with the cylindrical copper condenser. Design of experiments was used to facilitate the experimentation and response surface methodology was employed to identify the significant operating parameters and for the complete analysis of the system. The parameters chosen for the study were feed temperature, feed flow rate, and salinity. The response was distillate flux. Central composite design and analysis of variance is used to develop a quadratic regression equation to determine the relationship between the factors and the response and for determination of flux. It is shown that the feed temperature and feed flow rate favorably affect the flux, whereas the salinity has a negative effect on flux. A high value of flux of 6.55 kg/m2hr was achieved at optimum conditions of a temperature of 70 °C and a flow rate of 2 lpm.
