Numerical study of Heat Transfer Characteristics of an Impinging Synthetic Jet

Electronic cooling technique plays a vital role in modern equipment for effective dissipation of heat and to facilitates compact sizes of these devices. The thermal management of electronic components can be achieved by an attractive and promising cooling mechanism such as synthetic jet impingement at unsteady, and turbulent flow conditions over the heated surfaces. A numerical work is presented for study of heat transfer characteristics of an impinging synthetic jet of different orifice dimensions and at different flow conditions. The present study shows the optimum value of orifice diameter and axial distance of jet from heated plate to achieve high velocity of jet. The effect of inclination of impinging synthetic jet on the heat transfer from a uniformly heated flat plate is also presented. The average heat transfer coefficient was determined as a function of inclination angle, θ of synthetic jet relative to the plate, and jet to surface spacing, z/d between 4 and 10. The maximum heat transfer coefficient occurs for normal impingement at θ=90° for all z/d ratios. A non-monotonic reduction in the average heat transfer coefficient is observed with decrease in the angle of impingement. It is found that the flow is predominantly behaves as a direct impingement over an angular range of 40°<θ< 90°; below which it changes to cross flow conditions. The synthetic jets can be used up to an inclination angle of 40° and for jet to surface spacing, z/d equal to 8 with less than 10% reduction in heat transfer coefficients than that for normal impingement.
