Effect of mass ratio on the response of an upstream truncated circular cylinder
要約
Simultaneous in-line and transverse vortex-induced vibrations of a circular cylinder truncated at the front face have been numerically studied using the stabilized finite-element formulation. Two sets of computations with mass ratios (m*), defined as the ratio of the mass per unit
length of the truncated circular cylinder to the mass of
displaced fluid per unit length, 1 and 10 are performed in
the Reynolds number (Re) range of 50−200. The effect of mass ratio on the response characteristics is investigated. For both m*, the transverse displacement curve comprises three distinct zones: Desynchroniztion I (DS I), lock-in, and Desynchroniztion II (DS II). The m* = 10 cylinder witnesses a jump in the transverse displacement curve near the closure of lock-in. This interesting observation is found to be absent for m* = 1 cylinder. In the lock-in zone, the
response curve is convex in nature for m* = 1 while it is concave for m* = 10 cylinder. For both m*, the locus of the cylinder center establishes the presence of quasi-periodicity in cylinder motion near the closure of lock-in. The extent of quasi-periodicity is higher for high m* case. The 2S mode
of vortex shedding is present at the beginning of lock-in for
both the m*.
