Performance Analysis of an Aerostatic Thrust Bearing

The performance of six feed hole orifice type aerostatic thrust bearing is evaluated numerically using ANSYS FLUENT code by obtaining bearing load capacity and stiffness. An annular thrust pad with six feed hole configurations is considered for this analysis. The optimum location of the orifice on the thrust pad is obtained to get maximum bearing performance. The effect of the orifice geometry on the bearing performance is studied by considering four different types of orifice geometries. We also analyzed the impact of clearance height and rotational speed on the load capacity and stiffness.
