要約

Concentrated solar thermal (CST) systems offer high temperatures, which allow a wide range of applications, like power generation, process heating, and cooling. However, the intermittent nature of solar energy requires a thermal energy storage for the continuous operation of a CST system. The pebble-bed thermal energy storage can be a viable option, for integration with CST-based applications, considering simple design, environmental compatability, and a low cost. In the present work, a cascaded, pebble-bed, sensible thermal energy storage is experimentally evaluated. The charging and discharging process is investigated with the measured pebble-bed tempreature. The calculated, time dependent charging and discharging efficiencies are presented. It is found that the pebble bed thermal energy storage is capable of adequate storage and supply of heat for metal treatment in solar convective furnace (SCF) and this preliminary investigation can be useful in scale-up of the plant in such industry level.
