要約

Optimization of single-phase serial radiators for space applications is the topic of interest for this paper. The serial radiator configuration, where all the tubes in the radiator are connected in a serpentine fashion, is a better replacement for the parallel radiator configuration, which had flown in several space flights. Optimization of parallel radiators involving semi-analytical approaches with an assumption of 1D heat transfer in the fin is quite faster and accurate. In contrast, the optimization of serial radiator configuration requires conjugate heat transfer analyses at every iteration of optimization due to the non-uniform 2D temperature distribution. This study aims at approximating the serpentine serial radiator as a straight finned tube of length equal to the total length of the serpentine tube. This approximation enables the users to adopt the semi-analytical approach for carrying out the optimization process. This study also aims at bringing out the error involved in the approximation scheme and performing optimization of the serial radiator by interfacing the semi-analytical approach with the Genetic Algorithm. The heat rejection by the optimized configuration obtained through approximation scheme was compared with the conjugate heat transfer analysis and found the difference is within 2.6%. The time consumed by optimization through approximation scheme is only 0.4% of the time required by the high-fidelity optimization technique.
