要約

Electromagnetic stirring is a non-intrusive technique to stir the melt undergoing solidification. Stirring during the casting process aids in the creation of non-dendritic microstructure while ensuring uniform mixing of alloying components. This paper presents the effect of linear electromagnetic stirrer (LEMS) on A356 Aluminum-Silicon alloy. A LEMS has spatially distributed time varying 3 phase electric currents in coils arranged circumferentially around the melt core. This creates a travelling Lorentz force field in the melt. The LEMS, including the melt is modelled using Ansys-Fluent version 2021 r1 [7]. User Defined Functions (UDF) and Scalars (UDS) features of Ansys-Fluent areutilised to model the equations in Electromagnetism (EM) as a transport equation in terms of magnetic vector potential (MVP). The magnitude of EM forces predicted by the model is compared with experimentally obtained results for validation. The results from the analysis in Ansys-Fluent are found to be within 7% of the experimentally measured values. The UDF is coupled with the inbuilt solidification module to study the effect of stirring on the rate of solidification of A356 alloy.
