要約

The paper exposes an analytical and experimental analysis intended to improve the natural convective heat transfer for the cylindrical heat sink for chip on board (COB) LEDs. The average temperature variations on the hollow cylindrical heat sink (HCHS) is explored for a high powered (120 W) COB LED at bottom face where the number of fins is determined analytically. The experimental investigation is carried out for investigating the natural convective thermal performance of LED with HCHS by assessing the average wall temperature, luminosity and thermal resistance for the generated heat input for three distinct orientations such as down-lighting, inclined-lighting, and horizontal-lighting. As calculated form the analytical approach, the HCHS with 24 number of fins showed lower thermal resistance and also has lower manufacturing cost. The thermal performance of the HCHS is evaluated using thermal resistance by the measured average temperature difference. The incremental thermal performance in the down-lighting orientation as compared to the other studied orientations clearly demonstrates the orientation effect. A hollow cylinder installed on the top face found to have 27 percent increase in natural convective heat transfer for the down-lighting orientation for the HCHS incorporated with 120 W COB LED because of the chimney effect.
